Do I Need To Replace My Roof?

    Old Roof

Identifying whether your roof needs to be replaced may seems like a difficult task, but the truth is the signs that you need to keep an eye out for are often easy to spot, and you can ensure that your home stays safe & secure by keeping an eye out for these issues! Interested in learning a bit more about how to tell whether your roof needs to be replaced? Check out our blog for more information!

    Failing Shingles

The first, and most obvious, sign that most homeowners need to keep an eye out for, is failing shingles. Your shingles make up the outer layer of your roof, and they are the most important life of defense for keeping your home protected. This means they are exposed to tremendous amounts of inclement weather, particularly in Portland’s unpredictable climate, and the damage they accrue can appear in a variety of ways.

First, you may simply notice broken or missing shingles. Perhaps a branch fell on your roof, or maybe a strong gust of wind blew a single or two away. If you notice that your roof is missing shingles, or has broken ones, they will need to be replaced.

While those signs may be obvious, there are often far more subtle signs that your shingles are failing. Perhaps the most common is warping at the edges of the shingle system. This often means that the shingles have absorbed a fair amount of moisture, and they could be on the verge of rot, or other moisture issues. If you notice curling, buckling, or warping, consider it a sign that your roof has water damage and have an inspection performed ASAP!

    Sagging Roof Deck

A major warning sign that complete roof failure is right around the corner is a sagging roof. Your system will begin to sag when water damage has occurred to the roof deck. Because your shingles are heavy, when the roof deck has become soft and begun to rot, the roof will begin to sag in on itself. While it may be stable for some time, soon, the roof could collapse, causing major damage to your home & endangering you & your family. Be sure to keep an eye out on your roof deck to make sure that system is kept in good repair!
