Spring Roof Maintenance

After the snow thaws in Maine, many homeowners are left dealing with the damage that the winter has caused to their roof, and preparing for the spring & summer showers ahead. This means that proper roof maintenance is essential for your home’s health this spring! Interested in learning a bit about the roof maintenance you should be performing? Keep reading below for more information!

Check Your Shingles

First of all, you’ll want to examine the integrity of the most important aspect of your home’s roofing system, your shingles! Your shingle system is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, making it important to ensure that your shingles are kept in good repair and that any issues that arise during the winter are dealt with promptly. A few of the issues you want to keep an eye out for include missing or broken shingles, loose granules, or excessive mold & mildew growth. If you notice any signs that your shingles are damaged, by sure to reach out to a roofing professional to examine the system.

Clean & Repair Your Gutters

Next up, you will need to keep an eye on another important piece of your roofing system, your gutters. Particularly important during the rainy spring & summers in New England, your gutters serve the important function of routing water away from your home, protecting your shingles, fascia & soffit, and foundation from water damage. This means that if the system is clogged, or your gutters have broken during the frost, your home could be exposed to water damage, making it important to ensure that the gutters system is kept well-maintained! Be sure to clean your gutters (if you don’t have a leaf guard system), and spray a bit of water through the gutters to check whether there are any leaks. It can often be difficult to spot issues with your gutters if there isn’t any water actively moving through the system, and most homeowners don’t walk outside during a rainstorm to check!

Have Your Roof Inspected

If you suspect that your roof may have been damaged during the winter, the best thing you can do is reach out to a professional to assess the system and determine whether your roof will need repairs! It’s better to be proactive and have a roof inspection you didn’t need, rather than roll the dice and hope your roof is still in good repair after a tough winter!
