Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber Cement Siding

When it comes to siding replacements, there are plenty of siding options to choose from. It can often be difficult to decide which option is best for your home! However, there are a few siding options that stand out above the rest. Vinyl siding, for example, has long reigned supreme as the premier siding option in North America and for good reason. It offers a number of benefits for homeowners who choose to install it on their homes. However, it is far from the only siding option on the market, and one material that has been gaining in popularity recently is James Hardie’s Fiber Cement siding. While both materials are great options in their own right, they each other their own benefits and drawbacks. Let’s compare the two options below!

Aesthetics

When it comes to beautiful siding options, both materials have a claim in their own right. Vinyl siding is widely manufactured, meaning that it is available in a wide array of color options, making it a great option if you have a particular color in mind for your home’s exterior.

However, when it comes to aesthetic options, vinyl siding pales in comparison to Fiber Cement which is available in a truly enormous variety of colors. If you have a particular color in mind for your home’s exterior, fiber cement is your best bet!

Cost

When it comes to which siding material is more affordable, vinyl siding is the more economical option, but in this scenario, it comes with an asterisk. While vinyl siding is less expensive to install, fiber cement tends to last far longer, which can make it the cheaper option long-term. If you don’t except to be in your house for more than a couple of decades, you can safely install vinyl siding, but if you plan to be there for longer, installing fiber cement is the less expensive option.

Maintenance

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance siding option, vinyl siding is the best option. Fiber cement often needs to be repainted to keep it looking fresh, and it will need to be caulked in the joints to avoid water intrusion. However, when it comes to vinyl siding, there is little to no maintenance needed. The most maintenance you will typically need to perform for vinyl siding is periodically cleaning it with soap and water!
